Many have reacted this article the way you did to earlier articles. I suspect that if I had read this article 20 years ago, that I might disregard it as the ramblings of the misguided or incompetent.

To learn and improve, you have to be dissatisfied with your current situation. This usually doesn’t happen early in your career since you’re not responsible for a large complex system. You also haven’t banged your head against the wall long enough.

If you remain in this industry long enough you will do one of 3 things, leave, dig in or strive for excellence. Those who leave go into management. Those who dig in become legacy, maintenance programmers for the rest of their careers.

The rest of us continually search for better.
